On May 17, households in Sonoma County, California will be receiving $500 worth of monthly payments from a Guaranteed Income Pilot Program. This program is known as the Pathway to Income Equity pilot program that intends to distribute monthly payments to eligible recipients every third Wednesday of the month.

According to the Bay City News, the Sonoma County Administrator’s Office stated that out of the 6,450 applications submitted in 2022, 305 recipients were selected to receive the monthly payments. To be eligible for the Guaranteed Income Pilot Program, the applicants must have had at least one child aged below 6. The household must have been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and must have had an income of less than 185% beyond the federal poverty level. Reports say the last payments for this program will be issued in December 2024.

Effect of Guaranteed Income Pilot Program on Poverty

According to Notheis, the Chairman of the Sonoma County Board of Supervisors Chris Coursey stated that the monthly payments from the Guaranteed Income Pilot Program intend to help households with young children. This is because these households are the ones who are struggling due to both the high costs of child care and housing.

That being said, the officials of the Sonoma County intend to study the effect of the Guaranteed Income Pilot Program on reducing poverty, especially for households with young children. The information that will be gathered will reportedly be used to improve the welfare and health of the residents of Sonoma County. The preliminary findings are expected to be released in the spring of 2024, and then a final evaluation is expected in early 2025.
