Governor Laura Kelly of the state of Kansas introduced the plan for 2023 Tax Rebates after vetoing the Senate Bill 169. Kelly reportedly vetoed the bill because she claims that it would create a flat tax. This means that all taxpayers would pay at the same rate whether or not they have the ability to pay.

According to Smith, signing the Senate Bill 169 would have agonized both the public education sector and the middle-class taxpayers. Therefore, Kelly introduced the 2023 Tax Rebates plan that intends to provide tax rebates worth $450 up to $900. This initiative will reportedly be made possible because of the state’s surplus in budget worth $1.6 billion. In addition to the tax rebates, Kelly also plans to abolish the food sales tax.

Who is eligible for the 2023 Tax Rebates?

According to Russo, to be eligible for the 2023 Tax Rebates, an individual’s tax filing status is taken into consideration. This means that individual tax filers can receive $450, while joint tax filers can receive $900. Nonetheless, the 2023 Tax Rebates are still not guaranteed to happen in Kansas. This is because it has to pass the state’s Senate and House which are both dominated by the Republicans. Unfortunately, Kelly is a Democrat who encourages lawmakers to send the bill to her desk for her to sign.
