Danny Werfel stated that taxpayers with incomes below $400,000 will not have an increase in the rate of audits for several years. The new IRS commissioner added that all new audit money will be allocated to tax filers with high incomes.
On April 27, Danny Werfel, the new IRS commissioner told the U.S. Congress that taxpayers who earn below $400,000 will not have to worry about an increase in the rate of audits for several years. This is because Werfel stated that he will pour all the new audit money into tax filers with high incomes.According to Dinan, the new IRS commissioner added that the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) will be hiring armed investigators in the overall hiring of the agency. Nonetheless, Werfel stated that his main focus is on customer service and audits.

New IRS Commissioner’s Objectives
According to Keshner, the new IRS commissioner also requested for $1.8 billion in extra money in 2024, along with the additional $80 billion budget received by the agency in the 2023 climate bill. Reportedly, the $80 billion budget will be extended over the next 10 years.
The new IRS commissioner stated that his main focus in the next years will be the wealthy taxpayers who he believes are getting away with tax evasion. This is because Werfel thinks that the IRS does not have the capacity to go through these taxpayers’ filings because their tax returns can be thousands of pages long. Nonetheless, Werfel promised a complete hiring plan in the next few weeks while urging that the IRS still has to develop more.
