After a 35-year run, The Phantom of the Opera, Broadway’s longest-running musical, had its final show on April 16, 2022, at the Majestic Theatre in New York City.
Final Performance Details
Originally, the production was scheduled to close in February 2022, but its popularity led to an extension. The final show, the 13,981st performance, included speeches from composer Andrew Lloyd Webber and producer Cameron Mackintosh.
During the finale, according to USA Today, Sarah Brightman, the show’s original star, performed a reprise of “The Music of the Night” with the current and former cast members. The iconic chandelier then showered the audience with gold and silver confetti, bidding farewell to the production.
Mackintosh reassured the audience that the musical would return and referenced the success of other musicals. Webber, dressed entirely in black, dedicated the show to his late son Nick, who passed away at age 43. The emotional moment was a reminder of the impact The Phantom of the Opera had on both the Broadway industry and its creators.
