The former U.S. President Trump recently suggests using cyber warfare and sending special forces to attack the drug cartel leaders and stop fentanyl smuggling in Mexico. If reelected as president, Trump discusses using these battle plans in attacking the Northern American country.

According to Ward, Republican Representatives Dan Crenshaw and Mike Waltz also introduced a bill that seeks authorization to use military force in putting a stop to fentanyl smuggling in Mexico. In addition, Republican Senator Tom Cotton also stated he is open to sending military forces to attack drug cartel leaders in Mexico even without permission. Lawmakers in both the Congress and Senate have also filed legislation to classify some drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations. This move is reportedly supported by Republican presidential candidates.

Opposition to the Suggestions in Stopping Fentanyl Smuggling

An article on the Rolling Stone states that, on the contrary, not all Republicans are advocating for this approach. Trump’s third national security adviser John Bolton states that independent military operations are not the solution to stop fentanyl smuggling. In addition, Committee Chair Mike McCaul of House Foreign Affairs has concerns about the implications of this move toward immigration and bilateral relationship with Mexico.

Furthermore, Democrats are also opposed to the proposals introduced by the Republicans. U.S. President Joe Biden does not plan to launch an attack toward Mexico and dismissed the classification of drug cartels as terrorist organizations.
