Trump Indictment: Former U.S. President Not The First To Face Legal Problems

Reports say Donald Trump is the first U.S. President without any government or military experience. He is the first to be impeached twice and the first who challenged his successor. In recent addition, he is also the first former U.S. President who hopes for a re-election following the Trump indictment. According to Italie, however, Trump is not the first U.S. President to face legal problems.

Richard Nixon

An article on the Voice of America states that in 1974, the 37th U.S. President, Richard Nixon had faced charges on obstruction of justice or bribery in connection with the Watergate scandal. The scandal stemmed from Nixon’s administration’s attempts to cover up their involvement in the burglary of the Watergate Office Building of the Democratic National Committee in Washington, D.C. Nonetheless, Nixon had avoided the charges because then-U.S. President Gerald Ford had pardoned him weeks after he stepped down from the presidency.

Bill Clinton

In 2001, the 42nd U.S. President, Bill Clinton had his law license in Arkansas suspended for five years. This is because of allegations that he had lied under oath about his affair with Monica Lewinsky, an intern in the White House. However, he had reached a deal with prosecutors at the end of his second term.

Warren Harding

In the 1920s, several officials around the 29th U.S. President, Warren Harding were implicated in different crimes. These officials included Interior Secretary Albert B. Fall who had dealt with corrupt oil leases known as the “Teapot Dome Scandal”.
