Reports say the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) has already processed around 46 million federal income tax returns for the 2022 tax year. In addition, the agency has already issued over $108.2 billion in 2023 tax refunds. An article on MARCA states that on February 27, the average tax refunds was worth $3,079 which is 11% less than what was the average in 2022.

10 U.S. States with Highest 2023 Tax Refunds

According to Avery, unfortunately, the 2023 tax refunds fluctuate more in the state level. Lending Tree, an online platform, has ranked all 50 U.S. states by the highest average tax refunds for the 2022 tax year. The average 2023 tax refunds across the country was worth $3,745. However, the state of Wyoming has received over $1,000 more than the average at $4,877. Reports say Wyoming is the least populous state in the U.S. and one of nine states that does not collect income taxes.

If there are states with the highest 2023 tax refunds, there are also U.S. states with the lowest refunds. The state of Maine had received the least tax refunds at an average of $2,920. Reports say this amount is only 40% of what the residents of Wyoming received. Fortunately, the tax refunds received by Maine is a steady increase of 6% from receiving $2,752 in 2019 and receiving $2,743 in 2018.
