Residents in Hawaii who purchased an e-bike or moped in the past year can now apply for financial relief of up to $500. This program is designed to help residents with their purchases while supporting Hawaii’s green energy plans. The rebate will be either $500 or 20% of the bike’s purchase price, whichever is less, as reported by the Hawaii Department of Transportation’s official website on February 27, 2023.
To qualify for the rebate, as stated on the report, applicants must provide proof of at least one of the following conditions: participation in a low-income assistance program; not owning a motor vehicle with four or more wheels; or being currently enrolled in school, a community college, or a university. Only e-bikes and mopeds purchased in Hawaiian stores in the past year, going back to July 2, 2022, are eligible for the rebate.
To apply for the rebate, applicants can either apply online or request a hard copy application by calling (808) 831-7931. The application must contain supporting documentation, such as a receipt, to authenticate the transaction. This rebate program is a part of Hawaii’s clean energy goals and plans to move towards electric vehicles, including bicycles and mopeds.
This program is not only designed to help residents with their purchases but also to fill a key gap in mobility for many people in Hawaii. The Hawaii Department of Transportation Director Ed Sniffen said that the widespread adoption of electric vehicles will help the state achieve its clean energy goals while fulfilling a key mobility gap.
