Legislators are considering an Arkansas bill that will provide sales tax exemption for military veterans. This bill intends to exempt some disabled veterans from sales tax on purchases made in Arkansas.

Legislators in the state are considering an Arkansas bill that will provide financial assistance to some military veterans. The House Bill 1465 that would grant military veterans with 100% disability rating to be exempted from paying sales tax on purchases that are made in Arkansas.

According to Claybrook, if the House Bill 1465 will be authorized and signed into law, those who are eligible will receive a card that can be used for in-person shopping. The limit of the amount will be $25,000 each year for the disabled military veterans or their family.

Testimonies Promoting the Arkansas Bill

According to Gamble, to date, only the state of Oklahoma has provided this sales tax exemption. This is because people may think that paying less taxes means less revenue will be collected by the state. On the contrary, more veterans will be encouraged to spend money in a state because of this. Therefore, the House Bill 1465 would be an advantage because of the veterans who decide where they want to live.

Miller County Veteran’s Services office’s Tom Ornberg states that the House Bill 1465 will definitely alleviate the veterans of the burden of having to pay for additional sales taxes. Nonetheless, if the bill gets signed into law, it will cost the state of Arkansas around $16 million to $23 million every year.
