53,000 Cook County homeowners will receive automatic property tax refunds in the coming weeks for overpaid first installment taxes in 2021.
Many property owners didn’t claim exemptions that could have reduced their property taxes, such as Homeowner, Senior Citizen, Senior Freeze, and Disabled Persons exemptions.
Based on the report by Chicago Sun-Times on January 19, 2023, Andrew Gavrilos, a spokesperson for the Cook County Treasury, stated that the average refund amount will be $883.
Refund checks will begin to be distributed this week and will continue to be distributed over the next few months.
The Cook County Treasurer Maria Pappas said in a released statement that no extra action is needed to receive the refund. Refunds will be distributed automatically, eliminating the need for paperwork.
The method of receiving funds will be determined by the method of paying property taxes.
The 16,629 online payers will get direct deposit refunds, 22,241 bank or escrow payers will be mailed a refund, and 14,137 cash or check payers will get electronic refund or mailed refund application to receive payment.
Over the next three months, 58 percent of the refunds will be deposited directly, said the Cook County Treasurer, as stated in an article published by PR Newswire on January 18, 2023.
