The family of the inmate who died of malnutrition filed a lawsuit against Sebastian County jail in Arkansas. The family claims that the jail staff ignored inmate Larry Eugene Price Jr.’s medical and mental health needs.
Inmate Larry Eugene Price Jr.
In August 2021, Larry Eugene Price Jr., then 51, died at the Sebastian County jail in West Arkansas. According to reports, Price Jr. died from dehydration and malnutrition while being held at the facility. Price Jr. was then awaiting his trial on the terroristic threatening charge. On January 13, Price Jr.’s family filed a federal lawsuit against Sebastian County after claiming that the jail staff ignored the inmate’s medical and mental health needs.
According to Fox News, Price Jr. has been held in solitary confinement at the facility due to a history of serious mental illness. The lawsuit claimed that Price Jr. drank and ate less which caused his weight to drop from 185 pounds to 90 pounds in a year. It also accused the facility and Turn Key Health Clinics LLC, its medical provider, of neglect. This is because they discontinued Price Jr.’s medications after he refused to take them. The staff did not reportedly make any effort to address Price Jr.’s mental health needs.
Along with Sebastian County and Turn Key Health Clinics LLC, numerous unnamed employees were also accused. According to the lawsuit, Price Jr.’s constitutional rights have been violated which urged the family to seek penal and compensatory damages. Issues like understaffing, overcrowding, and inadequate space were also identified after inspections of the county facility were conducted.

How Price Jr. Ended Up in Jail
According to Fox News, Sebastian County Judge Steve Hotz announced that the sheriff’s office will conduct an internal review of Price Jr.’s case. Price Jr. was reportedly arrested in August 2020. This was after he barged into Fort Smith Police Department and threatened officers. At the time of his arrest, Price Jr. was reportedly homeless.
