A man from La Luz, New Mexico, is dead following a shooting during a suspected home invasion in Otero County, according to New Mexico State Police.
Lucas Eli Moore, 45, was fatally shot on the night of Saturday, December 14, just before 9 p.m. The incident occurred at a home on Appler Road, located six miles north of Alamogordo.
State Police responded to reports of a break-in at the residence, where the homeowner had fired a shot. Preliminary investigations revealed that Moore had been banging on the door of the home before forcibly entering. Inside the home were the homeowner, his wife, and their three young children.

Despite the homeowner’s repeated requests for Moore to leave, the intruder continued to advance into the home. He eventually entered the kitchen, where the children were sleeping nearby, down the hall in their bedrooms. Moore allegedly attempted to strike the homeowner, who then fired his handgun in self-defense.
After the shooting, the homeowner immediately contacted 911, reporting the incident. When emergency responders arrived, Moore was pronounced dead at the scene.
No injuries were reported among the homeowner, his wife, or the children, who were not awake during the altercation.
The New Mexico State Police Investigations Bureau is currently handling the investigation. As of now, no charges have been filed against the homeowner. Once the investigation is complete, the case will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office for review.
