A local nonprofit organization, Homewise, has received two substantial donations to support its mission of helping New Mexicans achieve homeownership. The organization, which has been a cornerstone in the state’s housing sector for decades, announced a $25 million gift from Yield Giving, a charitable foundation managed by billionaire Mackenzie Scott. This contribution is one of the largest the organization has ever received and will enable Homewise to significantly expand its services.
In addition, the Anchorum Health Foundation in Santa Fe has donated $10 million to Homewise. These funds are set to help the organization increase its efforts to provide affordable housing and assist first-time homebuyers.
Johanna Gilligan, Chief External Affairs Officer at Homewise, shared her gratitude, stating, “With the rising challenges of homeownership, this generous donation comes at a crucial time. It will allow us to expand our lending programs and create opportunities for individuals to build wealth and achieve their dreams of homeownership.”

Homewise, based in Albuquerque and Santa Fe, is also committed to building homes for those in need, especially since many markets fail to provide affordable options for first-time buyers. The new funds will help subsidize construction costs, enabling the organization to offer energy-efficient homes at accessible prices.
Gilligan further explained that the $25 million donation will help launch a green lending program, aimed at assisting current homeowners in lowering their home operating costs. In 2024 alone, Homewise has helped nearly 400 New Mexicans secure affordable housing, including Gabriel Ortega, who purchased his home in January with assistance from the organization. Ortega praised Homewise’s support, noting that their down payment assistance program was key to making homeownership a reality for him and many others.
Alongside Homewise, other New Mexico organizations also benefited from Yield Giving’s generosity. For a full list of recipients, visit the organization’s website.
