Texas City Man Dies After Swallowing Substance During Police Stop
A Texas City man has died after swallowing a substance during a police stop, according to the Texas City Police Department. The incident took place on Oak Street, where officers initiated a pedestrian stop for a traffic violation.
The man, identified as 47-year-old Derrick Dewayne Glenn of Texas City, was seen placing something in his mouth by the officers. He was then handcuffed for further investigation, and Emergency Medical Services (EMS) were called when Glenn appeared to be in distress.
While on the way to the HCA Mainland Emergency Room, EMS successfully removed a bag containing a substance from Glenn’s throat. Despite the efforts of medical staff to save him, Glenn was pronounced dead at the hospital.
The Galveston County Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy and toxicology report. The Texas Rangers and the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office have launched an investigation into the incident, as is standard protocol for in-custody deaths.
Once the investigation is completed, the findings will be submitted to the District Attorney’s Office. For additional information, inquiries should be directed to the Galveston County District Attorney’s Office.
