DPS Increases Traffic Enforcement for Safe Thanksgiving Holiday Weekend

The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) is ramping up enforcement efforts to ensure the safety of travelers during the Thanksgiving holiday, the agency announced.

From Wednesday, Nov. 27, through Sunday, Dec. 1, Texas Highway Patrol (THP) troopers will increase patrols across the state, focusing on key traffic violations, including failure to wear seat belts, driving while intoxicated (DWI), speeding, and violations of the “Move Over, Slow Down” law.

“As Thanksgiving approaches, we urge everyone to stay vigilant on the roads,” said DPS Director Steven McCraw. “This time of year can bring countless distractions, but the safety of yourself and others is what matters most. Take your time, avoid distractions, and let’s ensure everyone reaches their destination safely this holiday season.”

DPS is participating in the national Operation CARE (Crash Awareness and Reduction Effort) initiative, aimed at reducing crashes and promoting safe driving. During last year’s Thanksgiving enforcement period, DPS issued 41,093 warnings and citations, including 11,525 for speeding, 1,310 for driving without insurance, and 596 for seat belt and child seat violations. Additionally, the 2023 effort resulted in 54 felony arrests, 36 DWI arrests, and 18 fugitive arrests.

DPS is offering several safety tips for holiday travelers:

• Don’t drink and drive: Make alternate arrangements if you plan to drink.
• Eliminate distractions: Avoid using mobile devices while driving. Texas law prohibits texting or emailing while driving unless the vehicle is stopped.
• Move Over or Slow Down: Give courtesy to stopped emergency vehicles, including police, fire, EMS, and TxDOT trucks with emergency lights activated. As of 2024, over 9,284 “Move Over, Slow Down” violations have been recorded.
• Buckle up: It’s the law to ensure everyone in the vehicle is wearing a seatbelt.
• Slow down: Adjust your speed according to road conditions, weather, and traffic, especially in unfamiliar areas or construction zones.
• Drive defensively: Expect additional challenges with holiday travel.
• Use the left lane for passing only: Texas law requires slower traffic to stay right, using the left lane solely for passing.
• Avoid cutting off large trucks: These vehicles take longer to stop and maneuver.
• Steer It, Clear It: If involved in a non-injury crash, move your vehicle out of traffic to reduce congestion and prevent secondary accidents.
• Roadside Assistance: Store the Texas Roadside Assistance number (1-800-525-5555) in your phone for help with breakdowns and emergencies.
• Vehicle Maintenance: Ensure your vehicle is in good condition, and secure any cargo before heading out.
• Report hazards: If you notice a road hazard or suspicious activity, report it to law enforcement immediately.
• Monitor conditions: Check road conditions, weather, and closures before traveling. Visit Drive Texas for real-time updates.

DPS also reminds Texans to use the iWatchTexas program to report suspicious activity, especially during holiday events and gatherings. Reports can be made confidentially through the iWatch app, website, or by calling 844-643-2251. However, iWatchTexas should not be used for emergencies—call 911 for immediate assistance.

By following these tips and staying alert, DPS hopes to help ensure a safer, more enjoyable Thanksgiving for all Texans on the road.
