Alamogordo Police Department (APD) is being commended for their swift response to a dangerous theft incident at Western Ace Hardware in downtown Alamogordo. On the day of the incident, two suspects worked together to carry out a distraction-based ruse to steal high-value items from the store. Armed with knives, the suspects showed no hesitation in escalating the situation, which could have quickly turned violent for employees and customers.
After fleeing the scene on foot, the suspects made their way to the 800 block of New York Avenue, where they attempted to hide in a parked vehicle. However, thanks to the quick thinking of bystanders who alerted authorities, the APD was able to locate the suspects in the vehicle. Following a call for backup, officers demanded that the individuals exit the car. After some initial resistance, both suspects were arrested without further incident.
Police records reveal that the suspects, Estella Najeres and Genaro Navarro, are also believed to have been involved in a series of crimes in the Artesia area. The charges against them include aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, shoplifting over $500, conspiracy to commit shoplifting, and tampering with evidence. Navarro is additionally facing charges of resisting and evading arrest.
The suspects face third-degree felony charges, which carry penalties of fines and potential prison sentences ranging from 3 to 5 years. In the wake of the incident, the owners of Western Ace Hardware took to social media to express their gratitude for the APD’s quick and efficient handling of the situation. They also issued a warning to fellow small business owners to stay vigilant and prioritize the safety of their staff and customers.
This swift resolution highlights the importance of community collaboration and law enforcement’s readiness to respond to potential threats, ensuring the safety and security of Alamogordo’s local businesses.
