New Mexico State Police (NMSP) have charged a 17-year-old boy in connection with the shooting of his eight-year-old sister in Clayton, New Mexico. The incident occurred early Tuesday morning when officers from the Clayton Police Department responded to a home following reports of a shooting around 7:30 a.m.
According to investigators, 17-year-old Gio Blan was at home with his siblings preparing for school when he aimed a firearm at his sister, believing it was unloaded. Blan pulled the trigger, and the gun discharged, striking the young girl in the head. She was rushed to a Texas hospital, where she is listed in critical condition.
Following the shooting, NMSP reported that Blan dismantled the firearm and disposed of it in a dumpster, where officers later recovered it. Authorities noted that the weapon did not belong to anyone in the household.
Blan now faces multiple charges, including aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, negligent use of a deadly weapon, and tampering with evidence.
