A Houston Police Department officer was arrested Tuesday for alleged assault just a few weeks after joining the force, according to police.

Jonathan Torres, 24, has been charged with assault of a family member and unlawful restraint, according to an HPD social media post. Torres had been sworn in as an officer in August.

According to court documents, Torres is accused of closing a laptop on a family member’s hand and restraining the person. The victim allegedly had visible injuries and there was damage to the laptop. He also allegedly pinned the victim down, handcuffing her, and threatened to tase her when she attempted to leave the residence, according to court documents.

Assault on a family member and unlawful restraint are both Class A misdemeanors punishable by up to one year in prison and a maximum fine of $4,000.

HPD said Torres has been relieved of duty pending further investigation by the Internal Affairs Division.
