Odor in Houston drinking water poses no risk, officials say – Houston Public Media

City of Houston water customers should not be worried about foul tasting tap water but odor issues should be reported to 311, officials said.

Houston Public Works has received reports of changes in the smell and taste of Houston’s drinking water, but the changes are harmless and do not immediately pose a risk to the public.

“Routine testing shows the water contains naturally occurring compounds like geosmin and MIB… which are harmless but can cause a musty or earthy taste and odor,” according to Houston Public Works.

The compounds are produced by types of algae and bacteria in river water. An increase in the production of the compounds typically arise during summer into early fall when water temperatures are warm, lake levels are low and water flows slowly, according to District Data.

The public works department recommends people chill the water and add ice, use a slice or drop of lemon, or use a carbon filter to improve the taste of the water.

Any issues with the taste or odor of the water should be reported to 311. Reports help map affected areas for a complete resolution, according to Houston Public Works.

The department in a press release didn’t immediately say when the odor issues would be resolved.
