ESPN’s Adam Schefter was on his weekly podcast appearance for the Pat McAfee Show and shared some thoughts about the San Francisco 49ers injuries:
“Here’s a thing that I think will be a little bit problematic for this team going forward. Yesterday, Fred Warner left the game with an ankle injury. He didn’t finish the game. And when a player doesn’t finish the game with an ankle injury, that could tell you that his status for the upcoming game is in jeopardy.
I think they’re hoping that he’s back. Last week, they lose Javon Hargrave. His replacement, Jordan Elliott, yesterday suffered a knee injury. Fred Warner hurts his ankle. These are significant blows to this team. Hopefully, Fred Warner is not going to miss any extended time.
With that team, they continue to get pummeled, and it’s been that way all season long.”
Head coach Kyle Shanahan speaks at 3:30 p.m. PT on Monday. He should have the results from Warner’s MRI and an update on whether there are any new injuries to report.
Schefter also shared whether there was a timetable for Christian McCaffrey:
“I think here’s the truth of the matter. I don’t think Christian McCaffrey knows when he’s coming back. I don’t think the 49ers know when he’s coming back. I don’t think anybody knows right now when he’s coming back.
Now, they have talked and said that they are going to ramp up Christian McCaffrey, potentially even this week, starting to get him back to see how he’s feeling. Ideally, you’d like to think that he’s feeling better, and the time off would help. But who knows how his calf and Achilles are going to react? Nobody can say for certain.
Now I think in their minds, they’re not thinking season at all. It was brought up to Kyle Shanahan last week, and he scoffed at the idea To them, the thought of that never has occurred. I would say, of course, it should be occuring, because you don’t know when he is coming back. Again, the hope is that when he gets back on the practice field this week that, the pain has decreased. That the treatment that he received in Germany, whatever it was, worked, and that the information has calmed down, he feels better, and they get him back here in the coming weeks.
Nobody, nobody knows whether that’s going to happen or not going to happen.”
There you have it. It’s unlikely that Shanahan will have anything new on McCaffrey. As Schefter put it, nobody knows.
