49ers news: Jaylen Mahoney elevated after Talanoa Hufanga’s injury

The San Francisco 49ers announced a few moves ahead of their Week 4 matchup against the New England Patriots.

Defensive tackle Javon Hargrave and linebacker Curtis Robinson were officially placed on the Injured Reserve List. Hargrave suffered a partially torn tricep against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 3, while Robinson tore his ACL and was carted off during Thursday’s practice.

Defensive lineman Sam Okuayinonu was promoted to the active roster. Two new players were standard elevations. Undrafted rookie defensive tackle Evan Anderson is set to make his season debut.

Anderson was a player the 49ers invested in this past offseason to ensure he’d make their practice squad. He’s a big-bodied run-plugger who should come in handy against a run-heavy team like the Patriots.

The other player who was elevated from the practice squad was safety Jaylen Mahoney. The 49ers might be hedging their bets or telling us safety Talanoa Hufanga won’t be healthy in time for kickoff after rolling his ankle late in the week during practice.

If that’s the case, safety Malik Mustapha would likely make his first NFL career start. Although he didn’t start over George Odum before Hufanga was healthy, Mustapha played more snaps than Odum.

Ideally, none of this matters, and Hufanga is healthy enough to play.
