Norovirus Cases on the Rise

Arizona  – Doctors in Arizona are raising alarms about an increase in norovirus cases this winter, a highly contagious stomach infection known for causing vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.

Dr. Samia Kadri, who works at Banner Urgent Care, reports a sharp uptick in patients with symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, and diarrhea—classic signs of norovirus.

“Norovirus causes inflammation in the intestinal tract, leading to discomfort and flu-like symptoms,” said Anissa Taylor, program manager for the Pima County Health Department. “It’s often referred to as the stomach bug or stomach flu.”

With flu cases also at their peak this winter, doctors believe the rising illness rates can be attributed more to changes in behavior since the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Taylor, people are socializing more, and hygiene practices like frequent hand-washing have become less strict.

“We’re seeing more cases now, partly because we’re gathering more and being less cautious compared to earlier years when we were more diligent about hygiene and social distancing,” Taylor explained.

To prevent norovirus and other illnesses, health experts continue to emphasize the importance of hand-washing, staying home when sick, and staying hydrated if you contract the stomach bug. With schools preparing to resume in-person learning, the Pima County Health Department is bracing for a potential surge in cases.

The department urges the public to take preventive measures seriously to limit the spread of illness, particularly as the season progresses.
