Chinese Hackers Allegedly Launched a Series of Cyber Attacks on US Infrastructure

Concerns about cybersecurity threats are growing, and U.S. government officials and cybersecurity experts are saying that the Chinese military may be trying to get into important U.S. infrastructure, such as transportation systems, water and power utilities, and power grids.

According to the Washington Post, hackers allegedly working for China’s People’s Liberation Army have broken into the computers of about twenty important organizations over the past year. Their goal is to cause chaos and problems in case of a war with the United States.

Reports say that targets of these claimed cyberattacks include a Hawaii water utility, a major West Coast port, at least one oil and gas pipeline, and an attempt to hack into the Texas power grid operator. Although none of the intrusions have been found to affect industry control systems that do important work, the targeting of a utility in Hawaii is important because it could affect how the U.S. Pacific Fleet is deployed.

In reaction to these alleged attacks by states, the National Security Agency worked with officials from Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the U.K. to release a Joint Cybersecurity Advisory. This document explains the strategies, techniques, and steps that were used in these attacks.

In response to the alleged attacks, the US government and utilities are doing their best to improve their cyber defenses. Hackers may continue to target weak systems in the future, though, according to cybersecurity experts.
