On September 4, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu confirmed that the country is contemplating joint naval exercises with North Korea. Reportedly, in July, the Moscow capital encouraged North Korea to participate in the joint naval exercises with China for the first time in the history of the Pyongyang regime.

According to Davies, the proposal for the joint naval exercises was discussed at a conference by the National Intelligence Service of South Korea to the parliament. Reports say the political and military relations between Russia and North Korea have strengthened after the Eurasian country’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. However, on September 7, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning stated that she did not have information about the joint naval exercises with Russia and North Korea.

However, an article in The Messenger states that the joint naval exercises would mark a new level of cooperation despite the rising tensions between the U.S. and China and their respective allies in the East Asia.

Further reports say Alexander Matsegora, Russia’s ambassador to Pyongyang, stated that the participation of North Korea in the joint naval exercises along with Russia and China would be a direct response to the U.S. military drills in the region called the “JAROKUS” (the new Japan-ROK-US security arrangement).
