Governor Kessler Signed LD 701 Bill

This new legislation requires landlords to provide their tenants with a 75-day notice when they plan to increase the rent by 10% or more from the previous year, Portland Press Herald reported. This move comes as rents across Maine have been steadily increasing, leaving tenants vulnerable to sudden and substantial hikes without adequate time to prepare.

The LD 701 Bill also includes provisions for other rent increases, further safeguarding tenants’ interests. Under the LD 701 Bill, landlords will be required to give tenants ample time to adjust to any changes in their rent payments.

Rep. Christopher Kessler, representing South Portland and Cape Elizabeth, has been instrumental in advancing the LD 701 Bill. Serving his third term in the Maine House of Representatives, Kessler has been a strong advocate for housing rights, energy efficiency, and clean energy. He has long been involved in efforts to support tenants, as evidenced by his founding of the South Portland Tenants Association and his work as an energy auditor.

The LD 701 Bill is set to have a positive impact on tenants across the state, allowing them a greater sense of stability and security in their housing situations. With rents steadily rising, this legislation will provide tenants with essential time to plan for any rent increases, allowing them to gather additional resources or find more affordable housing alternatives.

Governor Mills‘ signing of the LD 701 Bill marks a significant step towards a fairer rental landscape in Maine. The LD 701 Bill will take effect 90 days after the final adjournment of the legislative session, providing landlords and tenants with ample time to adjust to the new requirements.

Moreover, Kessler has been at the forefront of other important housing-related bills, such as LD 691, which restricts the fees landlords can charge potential tenants during the rental application process. His dedication to tenant rights and affordable housing solutions underscores his commitment to the well-being of Maine residents.

With LD 701 Bill and other initiatives in place, the Maine legislature is making progress in protecting tenants and ensuring the stability of the housing market. The new LD 701 Bill is a testament to the state’s commitment to providing a secure and fair living environment for all its residents.
