Following the murder of George Floyd, the Minneapolis police reform was created to resolve the main issue that led to the victim’s death. Hennepin County Judge Karen Janisch then approved the settlement which included the reforms.
The Human Rights Department began their investigation shortly after May 25, 2020 when police officer Derek Chauvin restrained George Floyd by kneeling on his neck despite the victim’s pleas that he could not breathe. Floyd’s death triggered mass protests which urged the creation of Minneapolis police reform.An article in US News states that under the Minneapolis police reform, training in the questionable condition of excited delirium syndrome, which is the major issue that led to Floyd’s death, will be prohibited. In addition, the Minneapolis police reform decided of the use of dashboard and body-worn cameras and officers’ response to behavioral and mental health crises.

According to an article in AP News, on July 13, Judge Karen Janisch of Hennepin County signed a settlement agreement between the city of Minneapolis and the Human Rights Department of Minnesota that Minneapolis police reform must be enacted.
Reports say the Minneapolis police reform intends to implement police stops for broken taillights and searches on the smell of marijuana, to limit the use of tear gas and other chemicals, and to call for demobilization whenever possible.
