Bryan Kohberger’s DNA matched the sample from the knife obtained during the Idaho student murders. In addition, a DNA sample from the trash at the Kohbergers’ residence also helped in the investigation.
Bryan Kohberger’s DNA was reportedly a “statistical match” to the sample obtained from the sheath of the knife used during the Idaho student murders. Initially, the Federal Bureau of Investigation built family trees from the sample to identify the origin of the unknown DNA.However, according to Ruiz, the genetic genealogy did not produce significant evidence which urged the FBI to use an STR analysis. This suggests that the DNA collected and the sample taken from the Idaho student murders suspect were put into comparison.

According to Burnside, aside from the DNA obtained from the knife, a sample was also collected from the trash retrieved in the Kohbergers’ residence in Pennsylvania. The state’s law enforcement then sent the sample to the Idaho State Lab to help the investigators concentrate on Kohberger as the Idaho student murders suspect.
