On the night of June 24, 2022, Gianno Caldwell’s brother, Christian, was one of the three victims who were shot in the neighborhood of South Side in Chicago. The Chicago Police Department (CPD) states that the other two victims— a 25-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man— were unknown to Christian. Furthermore, both victims sustained non-fatal gunshot injuries.

According to Conklin, the city of Chicago recorded 1,137 shooting incidents and 291 murders in 2022, compared to the 1,074 shootings and 271 murders so far this year. However, the CPD has resolved only around 50% of the homicide cases over the last several years.
