A Parole For Van Houten?
Leslie Van Houten participated in the two killings at the order of Charles Manson, a cult leader in 1969.
Gov. Gavin Newsom’s last decision was reversed by the appellate court’s ruling that is to reject parole for Van Houten last 2020.
Since 2016, Van Houten has been recommended for parole five times. All the recommendations were rejected by either the former Gov. Jerry Brown or Gov. Newsom. The last rejection of the parole for Van Houten was in March 2022.
Leslie Van Houten is now in her 70s and is serving a life sentence. He was just 19 years old when the killing happened.
Gov. Newsom said that Van Houten still poses a danger to society. The governor added that Van Houten gives inadequate and inconsistent statements about her involvement with Manson, so her paroles were rejected.

Parole For Van Houten
The Los Angeles Second District Court of Appeal ruled 2-1 in reversing Newsom’s decision. The appeal stated that there is no evidence to support Newsom’s conclusions.
At the parole hearings for Van Houten, she shared and discussed how she was forced to illegal abortion, how she fell under Manson’s influence, her drug and alcohol abuse, and how her parents divorced.
The judges argued against Newsom’s statement that Van Houten’s past violent acts were caused by concerns about whether she will be released or not in the future.
The killings came the day after Manson’s followers, Can Houten is not included, killed the actress Sharon Tate who was pregnant at that time, and four others in violence.
Parole for Van Houten was approved last July 2020 hearing but it was blocked by Gov. Newsom. She didn’t stop and file an appeal with a trial court.
