CBS News reported that a popular Ghanaian Instagram influencer has been extradited to the U.S. from the United Kingdom after being charged for a role in a $2 million lucrative romance scam that targets the elderly in America.

Instagram Influencer Sentenced to 20 Years

The Department of Justice told that a 30-year-old Instagram influencer Mona Faix Montrage was charged by prosecutors with money laundering, money laundering conspiracy, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit wire fraud, and sentenced to 20 years in prison.

Prosecutors also charged the Instagram influencer with conspiracy to receive stolen money with a maximum sentence of five years and receipt of stolen money with a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison.

The Instagram influencer is from Accra, Ghana, has 4.2 million followers, and was among the top 10 most followed personalities in Ghana.

Allegedly, prosecutors said that Montrage was a member of a criminal enterprise in West Africa from 2013 through 2019, that committed fraud against individuals and businesses, including romance scams across the United States. The schemes targeted elderly women in America.

Instagram Influencer Involved In Scamming!

Prosecutors said that the way they scam their victims is by sending them social media messages like texts, and emails and tricking them to be in a romantic relationship with them. If they convinced their victims and gained their trust, they will convince their victims to transfer money to bank accounts.

Mona Faix Montrage received money from victims and allegedly controlled bank accounts that received over $2 million in funds.

FBI are now working tirelessly to target romance scammers which is a major concern for the authorities.
