On May 11, at around midnight, the Seattle Police received a 911 call from the neighboorhood of Windermere, stating that a family member had seen a man inside their house. While on the phone, the caller stated that their SUV was being driven away, while a purse was missing from their house.

According to Betz, the homeowner stated that an Apple AirTag tracking device was attached to a set of keys that were inside the purse. Using the information gathered from the Apple AirTag, the homeowner told the authorities the location of the stolen SUV.

As the authorities headed to the location, they received a separate report of a road rage incident in the 3000 block of NE 140th Street. Coincidentally, the vehicle involved in the incident matched the description of the stolen SUV.

Around 12:30 a.m., the authorities received another report of a man who was shot inside his vehicle at 3rd Ave NW and NW 75th Street. Upon arriving at the latest location, the authorities found the victim with a non-fatal gunshot injury and damage to his vehicle from the shooting. The description given of the vehicle whose owner opened fire also matched that of the stolen SUV.
