Letecia Stauch was sentenced to life in prison for killing her 11-year-old stepson in Colorado. Stauch was found guilty and convicted of child murder on May 8.
In January 2020, Gannon Stauch, then 11, was reported missing from his house in Colorado Springs. By March of the same year, his stepmother, Letecia Stauch, now 39, was arrested for child murder. Weeks after Letecia had been arrested, Gannon’s remains were found inside a suitcase discovered under a bridge near Pensacola, Florida.According to Harlan, during the trial that lasted for 5 weeks, prosecutors accused Letecia of stabbing Gannon 18 times and shooting him before disposing his remains in Florida. Reports say Gannon’s father, Al Stauch, was on a National Guard training when the child murder happened.
Charges Faced for Child Murder
However, according to Slevin, Letecia’s defense team argued that the stepmother was suffering from a “major psychotic crack” when the child murder happened. This means that Letecia pleaded not guilty to the charges due to insanity.
Nonetheless, on May 8, a judge read the jury’s verdict that found Letecia guilty of one count each of tampering with physical evidence and tampering with a deceased human body and two counts of first-degree murder. Furthermore, Letecia was sentenced to life in prison without possibility of parole by Judge Gregory Werner of the Colorado District for the child murder. For the two tampering charges, Letecia was also ordered to serve shorter prison sentences in addition.
