In March 2017, the incident reportedly began when Jose Gonzalez, 31, jumped on the bumper of an ambulance that was on its way to respond to an incident. The EMTs were warned about Gonzalez riding on the back of the ambulance by a passing motorist.

According to an article in NBC New York, when New York EMT Yadira Arroyo and her co-worker exited the ambulance to check, Gonzalez jumped inside. The suspect reportedly put the ambulance in reverse which ran over Arroyo. The New York EMT was immediately transported to a hospital but unfortunately died from her injuries. Reports say Arroyo was a mother of five and a veteran of the New York City Fire Department for 14 years.
