On April 13, lawmakers in Iowa have approved a proposal to change the eligibility requirements of the SNAP benefits 2023 in the state. This proposal is the Senate Bill No. 494 which intends to add more requirements to the eligibility criteria and further assess the individuals who are eligible for the SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program).

According to Robinson, Republican State Representative Joel Fry states that the proposal will allow the SNAP to continue in the long run. If the proposal will be approved by Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds, it would prevent households who have more than $15,000 in personal property and liquid assets from being eligible for the SNAP benefits 2023. Nonetheless, the restrictions for personal properties do not include the applicant’s house and vehicle.

An article on KCCI states that the changes in the eligibility requirements of the SNAP benefits 2023 mean that the federal funding for Iowa will need less than $42 million by 2027. Due to this, Pat Grassley, the Republican House Speaker, states that the state may save millions of dollars while making the SNAP services more effective. Nonetheless, state agencies would first have to utilize different federal sources such as the Social Security and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) data to validate the eligibility of the SNAP applicants.
