To date, around 460,000 residents of California have still not received their direct payments of up to $1,050. These payments are under the Middle Class Tax Refund program. According to the California Franchise Tax Board, the majority of the payments will be delivered by mid-January. However, delays may seem to be experienced. One of the recipients, Lucie Hostalek, stated that her direct deposit payments should have been received last November 2022 based on the FTB announcement. FTB stated that they have already issued 7,020,930 direct deposits and 9,112,953 debit cards since October 2022. As of December 30, around $9 billion in refunds have also been issued.

According to Dobkin, another recipient, Guy Ball, waited 42 minutes on the phone before a representative was able to connect with him. Even using the MyFTB chat instead of calling will result in a similar issue. Unfortunately, FTB media liaison Andrew LePage stated that there has been an influx in the usage of the chat option recently.

Estimated Schedule of Release

According to Dobkin, LePage guaranteed that this week, around 460,000 of the remaining direct deposit payments will be issued. Although, some payments still require more assessment from the FTB. This means that these payments will be issued beyond the schedule announced by the FTB. These payments are mostly for recipients who have changed their address since filing their 2020 return. These payments are expected to be received by February 14.
