According to Russo, Mills made this initiative possible when the Maine Public Utilities Commission announced an increase in electric rates last January. Reports say that customers of Central Maine Power Company will see an increase of 49%. Through the spending package, the residents of Maine will be able to receive financial assistance amidst the increasing prices of energy.

Who is qualified for these relief checks?
According to Haskell, to qualify for these relief checks, an applicant must be a resident of Maine. They must have filed a tax return and have not been claimed as a dependent in 2021. Individual filers must earn less than $100,000 annually, while joint filers must earn less than $200,000. On the other hand, the heads of household must earn less than $150,000 annually. Unfortunately, the deadline to qualify and file for an application has already ended on October 31 last year.
