A disturbing development at UCLA’s Saxon Suites involves the Los Angeles County District Attorney filing official charges against forty-one-year-old Jeffrey Brewer, Jr. for committing sexual assault to a student. The early Friday morning event prompted prompting authorities on campus to take immediate and serious action to strengthen security measures. Brewer is charged with first-degree residential burglary and sexual penetration by force, according to a news statement from the LA County District Attorney’s office. George Gascón the district attorney stated that he was deeply concerned about the seriousness of the sexual assault and emphasized his commitment to seeing that the victim received justice. According to DAILY BRUIN, detail Brewer’s alleged actions that night: initially loitering outside Saxon Suites around 1:30 a.m. gaining entry to the building after being let in by a student and subsequently leaving when asked to depart by another resident. Approximately an hour later Brewer allegedly forcibly entered another unit within Saxon Suites and sexually assaulted a student. In response to the incident campus security measures have been significantly bolstered. UC Police Department (UCPD) Lieutenant James Echols confirmed increased patrols by campus security officers, private security, and housing security in the Hill area of UCLA where Saxon Suites is located. These measures are aimed at ensuring the safety and well-being of all students following this distressing event.

UCLA Reacts with Shock and Solidarity

Jeffery Brewer was swiftly charged on Monday and entered a guilty plea to all of the allegations made against him. Brewer may receive a maximum term of 25 years to life in state prison plus an extra six years due to the seriousness of the offenses. At the Airport Courthouse on August 13 Brewer will have a preliminary hearing where the next steps in the judicial process will decide how this matter is handled. In light of these occurrences the UCLA community has reacted with shock and worry. Students have expressed concerns about campus safety and have expressed sympathy with the survivor. University officials continue to collaborate closely with law enforcement agencies to implement stringent security protocols and provide necessary support services to affected students.
