Police authorities said that a high school cheerleader is fatally shot and killed while leaving a house party and the suspects remain at large.
Cheerleader was Fatally Shot and Killed
The Phoenix Police Department in Arizona released its official statement in connection to the death of the 17-year-old cheerleader Desiree Rivas who was struck and killed by unknown suspects over the weekend. The shooting incident happened while the cheerleader was leaving a house party.
In a published report in FOX News, police authorities arrived at the scene after they received reports of gunshots in the neighborhood. When they arrived, they saw Rivas having a gunshot wound. The firefighters responded immediately to treat Rivas but she was pronounced at the crime scene.
The Cheerleading team of Cesar Chavez High School posted on their social media post, “It is with the heaviest of hearts that I post about the tragic loss of our amazing friend, athlete, and student Desiree. Our hearts are broken into a million pieces. There will be extra counselors on campus tomorrow to help us all work through this tremendous loss. May Dessy rest in peace and be surrounded by love and light. We love you, Desiree.”
Suspects Fled from the Scene
According to a report published in PEOPLE, neighbors within the area heard the gunshots and saw some teenagers leaving and running after the gunshot.
One of the residents in the area said, “I was in bed and I heard these gunshots, and they were loud. It seems like they were right in my yard. They were so loud. I was scared to get up because I didn’t know where they were coming from since they sounded so close.”
Another man also shared that he heard five or six shots that night and two different guys running after the gunshot. He also added that he was not able to sleep when it happened because the chopper was going around for five hours searching for the suspect.
Furthermore, police authorities said that they do not have any information until now about the identities of the suspect. The Phoenix Police Department is asking community members to reach out to them for any information they know about the suspect.
