On January 28, at around 2 a.m., an Atlanta Police Department (APD) officer was conducting a traffic stop at 2841 Greenbriar Parkway, Atlanta when the theft of the police car happened. The officer was speaking with a driver when another person, who was not related to the traffic stop, hopped inside the police car and sped away. The officer immediately alerted dispatch and a helicopter from the APD Air Unit about the stolen police car.

According to Jackson, the speeding suspect eventually lost control and drove onto the train tracks at the intersection of McDonough Boulevard and Hank Aaron Drive. When the police car flipped over, Georgia State Patrol (GSP) troopers and the APD officers raced to rescue the suspect against an oncoming train headed for the police car. Just seconds before the train hit the police car, the authorities were able to pull the suspect out. An aerial and bodycam video of the rescue was released by the police thereafter.
