Thailand’s New Government’s Strengthening Relations With China Raise Concerns In U.S. As Allies

Thailand’s new government has strengthened the country’s relations with China since the beginning of its term in August. However, reports say Thailand’s association with China might raise concerns in the U.S. which is a major ally and trading partner.

Since the beginning of the term of Thailand’s new government last August, Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin has actively strengthened the country’s relations with China. Further reports say one of the major meetings that Thailand’s new government had was with the Chinese ambassador to establish preparations for future diplomatic sessions.

According to Audjarint, in September, Thailand’s new government strengthened relations with China with the launching of visa-free entry for Chinese individuals to Thailand. In addition, earlier this October, Thavisin also made an official visit to China where he appeared at the 3rd Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation. In acknowledgment, Thavisin also invited the Chinese President Xi Jinping to visit Thailand.

Thailand’s New Government’s Relations With U.S.

However, according to Singh Gill, the relations of Thailand’s new government with China might raise concerns in the U.S. as the North American country is a major ally and trading partner. Reports say the U.S. is committed to maintaining its influence in the Asian region and the relations of Thailand’s new government with both countries may be a challenge amid competition in U.S.-China relations.
