U.S. President Biden is expected to meet the Vietnamese General Secretary in Hanoi today, September 10 to improve the U.S.-Vietnam relations. However, China’s assertive actions in the South China Sea may cause Vietnam to think the development over.
On August 28, U.S. Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre announced that American President Joe Biden I scheduled to meet Vietnamese General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong in the city of Hanoi today, September 10.An article in Reuters states that the meeting is intended to improve the U.S.-Vietnam relations by advancing technology and innovation for the Vietnamese economy, increasing workforce development programs and education exchanges, and tackling climate change. To put it briefly, Biden’s trip is expected to develop the U.S.-Vietnam relations by promoting strategic partnership– the highest rank in the diplomatic hierarchy of Vietnam.

U.S.-Vietnam Relations Uncertain
However, according to Nguyen, Biden’s attempt to improve the U.S.-Vietnam relations is disputable due to China’s increasingly assertive actions in the South China Sea. This is because the country of Vietnam itself is still uncertain about the position it would play between the U.S. and China.
Furthermore, apart from Vietnam’s compliance with the ‘Three Nos’ policy, the development of U.S.-Vietnam relations is still uncertain due to both countries having no underlying interests in the South China Sea. In addition, Vietnam still has a deep-rooted suspicion of a peaceful evolution from the U.S.
