U.S. Rep. George Santos’ Fundraiser Charged With Wire Fraud, Impersonating McCarthy’s Aide

Sam Miele was charged with wire fraud and identity theft for impersonating House Speaker McCarthy’s congressional aide. Reports say Miele was U.S. Rep. George Santos’ fundraiser who defrauded donors for the Republican’s campaign.

Federal prosecutors accused U.S. Rep. George Santos’ fundraiser Sam Miele, 27, of sending fraudulent fundraising solicitations to several likely donors between August and December 2021. Further reports say George Santos’ fundraiser also signed the emails with the full name and title of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy‘s congressional aide.

An article in CBS News states that in September 2022, George Santos’ fundraiser admitted in a letter that he faked his identity to a big donor to solicit contributions for the Republican‘s campaign. In addition, George Santos’ fundraiser also confessed to earning a commission of 15% for every donation he had raised.

George Santos’ Fundraiser Charged

According to del Valle, on August 16, George Santos’ fundraiser was indicted on federal charges of four counts of aggravated identity theft and wire fraud. Nonetheless, George Santos’ fundraiser pleaded not guilty in a federal court in Brooklyn and was released on a bond worth $150,000.

Further reports say the indictment did not reveal the identity of the individual who was impersonated. However, the details of the indictment and several news reports matched the identity of Dan Meyer, the former chief of staff to McCarthy.
