This joint operation between Russia and China has been described as “unprecedented” by Senator Dan Sullivan, a Republican from Alaska, CBS News reported.

What Are the 4 U.S. Navy Destroyers?

The U.S. Navy destroyers are USS John McCain, USS Benfold, USS John Finn, and USS Chung-Hoon to the Aleutian Islands region. These U.S. Navy destroyers were supported by U.S. aircraft, which had been monitoring the joint exercise since its commencement in July. It’s important to note that U.S. Coast Guard ships are regularly present in the area as well.

While U.S. Northern Command emphasized that the Chinese and Russian patrol remained within international waters and was not considered an immediate threat, the sending of U.S. Navy destroyers underscores the ongoing cooperation between the two nations’ militaries. Furthermore, this occurrence highlights the proximity of Alaska to China and Russia.

Last September, a similar joint exercise took place with seven Chinese and Russian ships spotted near Alaska in a single formation. As China and Russia have been strengthening their ties amid ongoing tensions with the U.S. over issues like Taiwan and Ukraine, incidents like these raise concerns about international stability.

The Chinese embassy clarified that the current patrol is part of an annual cooperation plan and is unrelated to the present international and regional situations, The Guardian reported.

Senator Sullivan, reflecting on the situation, underscored Alaska’s strategic significance in national defense and territorial sovereignty. He highlighted the aggressive authoritarian actions of Beijing and Moscow and stressed the importance of a robust response from the U.S. military to safeguard national interests in Alaska and send U.S. Navy destroyers as a response.

This latest development and move by sending U.S. Navy destroyers serves as a stark reminder of the evolving geopolitical landscape and the vital role that swift and decisive actions play in preserving international security and maintaining diplomatic relationships.
