Prosecutors Rest Case in Parkland Shooting Trial of Former School Resource Officer

The prosecution rested its case in the trial of former school resource officer Scot Peterson. Reports say Peterson failed to respond during a Parkland shooting at a high school in Florida.

The prosecution accused former school resource officer Scot Peterson, 60, of failing to appropriately respond during a Parkland shooting in February 2018. Reports say Peterson took cover outside Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School for more than 45 minutes.

Nonetheless, an article in CNN states that Peterson pleaded not guilty to seven counts of felony child neglect, three counts of culpable negligence, and one count of perjury. Reportedly, Peterson was charged with perjury for stating that he only heard two to three gunshots, while other witnesses said they heard more.

Case Rested in Parkland Shooting Trial

According to Andone, on June 21, the prosecution rested its case in the trial of Peterson for the Parkland shooting. Throughout the case, the prosecutors sought to portray Peterson as a law enforcement officer who failed to carry out his duty despite years of service and active shooter training.

However, Mark Eiglarsh, the defense attorney argued that the only individual responsible for the deaths and casualties during the Parkland shooting was the shooter. Reportedly, in 2022, the suspect pleaded guilty and was sentenced to life in prison without parole.
