More Details on the Shooting
According to Richard, Sheriff T. K. Waters held a press conference in the evening of the same day. Waters announced that the shooting was the conclusion of the investigative efforts of the police officers. Around 5:30 p.m., the police officers reportedly received a burglary report at a residence. About an hour later, the police officers located the suspect and his vehicle at the 1800 block of Hardee Street, almost two blocks away from the reported location.
The police officers approached the vehicle but the suspect was reportedly sleeping in the back passenger seat. According to the officers, they were able to trace some of the stolen items from the residence. After speaking to some residents, the police officers mapped out a plan before returning to the vehicle. However, upon returning, they noticed a handgun on the roof. The gun was then immediately removed.
The police officers reportedly asked the suspect to step out of the vehicle and show his hands. However, the suspect refused and fired at the officers for an unknown reason. A bullet grazed one of the officer’s left side of the face. In retaliation, all 5 officers fired back which killed the suspect at the scene. Waters also announced that all officers were put on administrative leave following office policy. To date, the Jacksonville Police and the State Attorney’s Office are still investigating the incident.
