Arctic Blast Sweeps Across U.S., Bringing Cold Air Mass of the Season
According to source, the coldest cold air mass of the season is sweeping through the central, eastern, and southern United States, plunging temperatures to mid-winter levels from the Midwest to Florida. Although not anticipated to break records, the sudden temperature drop, affecting around 100 million Americans, is a notable shock to the system, as is typical with the first cold air mass waves of the season, according to AccuWeather.
On Tuesday, high temperatures are expected to range from the 30s and 40s for New England, the mid-Atlantic, and the Carolinas, with the Southeast, Gulf Coast, and north Florida experiencing temperatures in the 50s.
Meanwhile, the Great Lakes, Midwest, central Plains, middle Mississippi, and Ohio Valleys will see chilly highs in the 20s and 30s, and Texas and the lower Mississippi Valley will have highs in the 50s. This results in temperatures 10 to 20 degrees below average on Tuesday across the entire eastern half of the nation, according to the National Weather Service.

Canadian Cold Air Mass Retreats: Relief and Winter Wonderland Ahead
The source of this unusually cold air mass is from the northern portions of Canada, as reported by AccuWeather. Fortunately for those who dislike cold air mass weather, this blast is expected to be short-lived. AccuWeather senior meteorologist Alex Sosnowski mentioned that during the second half of the week, the temperature trend will reverse, recovering to near the historical average over much of the eastern third of the nation.
For snow enthusiasts, most areas won’t experience snowfall with this cold air mass blast. However, regions around the Great Lakes are witnessing a winter wonderland due to the lake-effect snow machine. Up to two feet of snow is expected downwind of Lakes Erie and Ontario by the time the snow subsides on Wednesday.
