Indianapolis, IN – Indiana will receive nearly $25 million in federal funding to reclaim abandoned coal mines and restore land to pre-mining conditions. The funding, part of a $377 million initiative over 15 years, comes from the Office of Surface Mining Reclamation and Enforcement.

According to the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR), more than 2,000 reclamation projects have been completed since 1982. The funds aim to address safety, environmental, and health hazards posed by legacy mines. Hoosiers who own such properties are encouraged to report them to the DNR for evaluation.

Property owners can contact the program at [email protected] or call 1-800-772-6463. Once reported, projects are evaluated and prioritized based on need, with many completed within a year.

Residents are urged to help identify properties that may qualify for cleanup, ensuring environmental and community safety.
