McHenry, IL – A 50-year-old McHenry woman was arrested Monday in connection with a September hit-and-run that killed a 24-year-old pedestrian in Island Lake.
Authorities say the incident occurred on Friday, September 27, at 10:48 p.m., in the 4300 block of Roberts Road. A vehicle struck Austin Stanek, of Island Lake, and fled the scene. Stanek was transported to Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital in Barrington, where he was pronounced dead.
According to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, an extensive four-month investigation by the Major Crash Investigation Unit identified Christine S. Eilers as the suspect. Deputies gathered evidence, including the discovery of the involved vehicle in a Lake County garage.
Eilers was arrested without incident on January 6. She is charged with leaving the scene of a crash involving death, a Class 4 felony, and failure to report the crash, a Class 1 felony. Eilers remains in custody at McHenry County Jail.
Her next court date is set for Tuesday. Officials remind the public that Eilers is presumed innocent until proven guilty.
