South Dakota Braces for Bitter Wind Chills Tonight Along I-29: What to Expect Tomorrow

Sioux Falls, SD – Residents along Interstate 29 should prepare for plummeting temperatures and icy conditions tonight. Wind chills are forecasted to drop to between -5 and -15 degrees early Wednesday morning, creating dangerous outdoor conditions for anyone unprepared. Light snow and flurries are expected to taper off later today, but cold air will persist.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, highs will reach only 22 degrees today, with overnight lows near 2 degrees. Winds will remain light, but clear skies tonight will contribute to the frigid start on Wednesday.

Wednesday will bring sunshine, with slightly warmer highs near 24 degrees, but wind chills will remain well below freezing early in the day. The week’s cold snap moderates slightly by Thursday, with highs reaching into the low 30s. Light snow is possible Thursday afternoon and overnight, though no significant accumulation is expected.

Heading into the weekend, Friday and Saturday remain partly sunny, with highs climbing to the upper 20s by Saturday. South Dakota drivers are advised to stay cautious, especially on untreated roads during overnight freezes. For those traveling along I-29, allow extra time and watch for slick spots.
