Blacksburg, VA – A Winter Weather Advisory remains in effect for portions of Virginia, North Carolina, and West Virginia until 9 a.m. Tuesday. Light snow and black ice are creating hazardous travel conditions, especially on bridges and overpasses. Winds gusting up to 50 mph are compounding risks, with the potential to bring down tree branches and power lines.
According to the National Weather Service, overnight snow accumulation is expected to remain under one inch, but freezing temperatures will cause widespread black ice on roadways. Drivers are urged to exercise extreme caution during their morning commutes, particularly on I-81 and other major routes. Slippery conditions could lead to delays, while gusty winds may cause high-profile vehicles to struggle.
Temperatures will remain below freezing throughout Tuesday, with highs only reaching the upper 20s. Looking ahead, the forecast indicates partly sunny conditions on Wednesday, followed by clear skies and colder lows near 12°F Wednesday night. Thursday will bring sunny weather, but temperatures will stay chilly, peaking around 24°F.
Residents should prepare for potential power outages caused by icy conditions and tree damage. Keep generators outside in well-ventilated areas and avoid downed power lines. Stay updated on weather alerts by calling 511 for road conditions or tuning into NOAA Weather Radio.
Plan ahead for the rest of the week, as another winter storm may develop late Friday into Saturday.
